Chemetall, part of BASF’s Coatings division, has transitioned its Langelsheim site in Germany to 100 percent renewable electricity.

This marks a key step toward the company’s goal of using 80 percent renewable energy across all sites by 2025.

Chemetall’s Langelsheim site — its third largest globally and a major aerospace sealant hub — now runs entirely on solar and wind power supplied by BASF Renewable Energy. The transition is expected to eliminate approximately 620 tons of CO₂ emissions annually.

With about 230 employees, Langelsheim is Chemetall’s largest production site in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and South America — and its third largest worldwide.

The facility is a key manufacturer of aerospace products, including Naftoseal aircraft sealants, which are used by leading aircraft manufacturers and maintenance, repair and overhaul companies. The site also produces corrosion protection agents, industrial cleaners and surface treatment solutions.

Frank Naber, senior vice president of Chemetall said,

We are committed to sustainability at Chemetall and have the ambitious goal of utilizing 80% renewable electricity across all our sites globally in 2025. Operating our Langelsheim production site 100% on renewable electricity is an important milestone for us as it is our third largest production facility worldwide.

Further, by stressing both climate responsibility and customer alignment, Naber underscores the strategic importance of Langelsheim’s shift:

The CO2 reduction of approximately 620 tons per year means a significant reduction of our carbon footprint and we will continue to improve it by adopting renewable energy sources. Contributing to a more sustainable future is a high priority for us as an organization in general, and we can support our customers in reducing their environmental impact as well.

Especially our aerospace customers benefit from this initiative in Langelsheim as it is one of our key production facilities for aerospace sealants technologies

The move follows similar efforts across Chemetall’s global operations. In February, the company reported that its Blackman Township facility in Michigan had also transitioned to 100 percent renewable electricity, cutting an estimated 950 tons of CO₂ emissions annually.

This development follows similar initiatives at Chemetall’s other facilities. In February 2025, the company announced that its Blackman Township production facility in Michigan, USA, had also transitioned to 100% renewable electricity, resulting in an estimated reduction of 950 tons of CO₂ emissions annually.

Additionally, Chemetall has implemented advanced photovoltaic systems at its Boksburg site in South Africa, which are expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by 92% at that location.

These efforts contribute to BASF’s broader goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. By transitioning its facilities to renewable energy sources, Chemetall not only reduces its own carbon footprint but also supports its customers in achieving their sustainability targets.

BASF, which calls climate change “the greatest challenge of the 21st century,” takes a three-pronged approach to driving sustainability: Internal efficiency, sourcing energy responsibly and helping its customers reduce their carbon footprint.

According to a Washington Post report, BASF is aiming for net zero emissions by 2050. By 2030, the company wants to reduce its Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent.
